Mormon Battalion documentary - Church News
SALT LAKE CITY — A two-hour documentary about the Mormon Battalion has been produced by public television station KUED Channel 7 and will premiere Monday, July 21, at 8 p.m.
The 500-man battalion came from Mormon pioneers who, under President Brigham Young's leadership were en route to the Salt Lake Valley in 1846. The battalion was raised by President Young at the directive of U.S. President James K. Polk for the war with Mexico. By answering the nation's call, the battalion eased relations with the federal government and secured badly needed funding for the saints' westward trek.
"Battalion" is the creation of Ken Verdoia, senior producer at the station and a veteran of 19 previous documentary films. Maps, timelines and behind-the scenes information can be viewed at the station's Web site,www.kued.org/battalion.
